T.R.P.: Entrée en vigueur du titre de technologue en physiothérapie

L’OPPQ a l’immense plaisir d’annoncer que le titre de technologue en physiothérapie (physiotherapy technologist) remplace désormais celui de thérapeute en réadaptation physique (physical rehabilitation therapist).

Ce nouveau titre, dont l’abréviation est «T. phys.» (Phys. T. en anglais), est entré vigueur le 24 septembre 2020 lors de l’adoption de la Loi modifiant le Code des professions et d’autres dispositions notamment dans le domaine buccodentaire et celui des sciences appliquées (Projet de loi 29).

Étapes de mise en application

Soulignons que l’utilisation des titres suivants n’est dorénavant plus conforme au Code des professions:

  • Thérapeute en physiothérapie (Physiotherapy Therapist)
  • Technicien en réadaptation physique (Physical Rehabilitation Technician)
  • Technicien en physiothérapie (Physiotherapy Technician)

Même si le titre de thérapeute en réadaptation (physical rehabilitation therapist) peut encore être utilisé pour une période transitoire de cinq ans, les membres sont invités à faire usage de leur nouveau titre dès maintenant.

À savoir:

  • Tout titulaire d’un permis de thérapeute en réadaptation physique devient titulaire d’un permis de technologue en physiothérapie
  • Le numéro de permis demeure le même (il est important de continuer à l’inscrire dans les communications avec les tiers)
  • Le permis imprimé demeure valide jusqu’à la réception de la nouvelle version que l’Ordre fera parvenir au printemps 2022
  • Les membres concernés ont jusqu’au 24 septembre 2025 pour modifier l’ensemble de leurs outils de communication (cartes professionnelles, signature électronique, site web, publicités, etc.).

Au cours des prochaines semaines, l’Ordre fera parvenir aux membres des informations et des outils pratiques (tels une foire aux questions et un aide-mémoire) afin de les aider à mettre en application ce changement.

Déploiement du titre à l’OPPQ

L’Ordre modifiera progressivement ses outils de communication, dont son site web, et sa base de données.

Des représentations seront également réalisées auprès des parties prenantes externes (maisons d’enseignement, ordres professionnels, tiers payeurs, fournisseurs, etc.) afin de les informer du changement de titre.

Les textes des lois et des règlements qui s’appliquent aux professionnels de la physiothérapie seront graduellement mis à jour par les instances gouvernementales.

Une véritable reconnaissance pour les T.R.P.

Issu d’une recherche rigoureuse menée par une terminologue agréée, le titre de technologue en physiothérapie (T. phys.) reflète mieux la nature du travail des T.R.P., qui dépasse celui d’un technicien, tout en préservant l’identité professionnelle unique de ces professionnels de la santé.

Ce nouveau titre a également l’avantage de mettre en avant auprès de la population ainsi qu’au sein du milieu de la santé la place d’intervenants dans le domaine de la physiothérapie de ces professionnels.

Au cours des dernières années, l’OPPQ a participé à la mise en place d’une série de mesures favorisant le développement de la profession. Parmi celles-ci, rappelons la création d’une attestation de perfectionnement d’études collégiales (AEC), d’une révision approfondie du Règlement 94m, d’une mise à jour du programme de formation en techniques de physiothérapie ainsi que le changement de nom du programme, aujourd’hui désigné par techniques de physiothérapie.

P.R.T.: The title of physiotherapy technologist comes into force

It is with immense pleasure that the OPPQ announces that the title of physiotherapy technologist (technologue en physiothérapie) now replaces the title of physical rehabilitation therapist (thérapeute en réadaptation physique).

This new title (abbreviation: Phys. T. or T phys. in French) came into force on September 24, 2020 with the adoption of Bill 29, An Act to amend the Professional Code and other provisions in particular in the oral health and the applied sciences sectors.

Enforcement steps

It should be noted that the following titles are no longer in compliance with the Professional Code:

  • Physiotherapy Therapist (thérapeute en physiothérapie)
  • Physical Rehabilitation Technician (technicien en réadaptation physique)
  • Physiotherapy Technician (technicien en physiothérapie)

Although the title of physical rehabilitation therapist (thérapeute en réadaptation physique) can still be used during a five-year transitional period, members are encouraged to begin using their new title immediately.

Please note:

Any holder of a physical rehabilitation therapist license becomes the holder of a physiotherapy technologist license

  • The license number remains the same (it is important to continue to use it in communications with third parties)
  • The printed license remains valid until you receive the new version that the OPPQ will send you as soon as possible
  • The members concerned have until September 24, 2025 to update all of their communication tools (business cards, electronic signature, website, advertising, etc.)

In the coming weeks, the OPPQ will be sending members information and practical tools (such as frequently asked questions and a checklist) to help them implement the change.

Deployment of the title by the OPPQ

The OPPQ will gradually modify its communication tools, including its website and its database.

Representations will also be made to external stakeholders (educational institutions, professional orders, third-party payers, suppliers, etc.) to inform them of the change of title.

The legislation and regulations that apply to physiotherapy professionals will gradually be updated by the government bodies.

Genuine recognition for physical rehabilitation therapists

Based on rigorous research conducted by a certified terminologist, the title of physiotherapy technologist (Phys. T.) better reflects the nature of work accomplished by a P.R.T. beyond that of a technician, while preserving the professional identity that is unique to these health professionals.

This new title also has the advantage of highlighting to the public and to the health care community the role played by these professionals in the field of physiotherapy.

In recent years, the OPPQ has participated in the implementation of a series of measures to promote the development of the profession. These include the creation of an Attestation of Advanced College Studies (AACS), an in-depth review of Regulation 94m, an update of the physiotherapy technology training program, and the change of name of the program, today referred to as Physiotherapy Technology.
