Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ)’s primary function is to protect the public by ensuring its members provide quality services.
The Order and the Professional System
Quebec’s current professional system came about in 1973 with the advent of the Professional Code. Lawmakers gave professional orders certain responsibilities, including their main task of protecting the public.
This led to the creation of the Quebec professional system’s two major bodies:
- Office des professions du Québec is the government agency that ensures each professional order fulfills its mandate to protect the public.
- The Québec Interprofessional Council represents all the orders and liaises with the government on their behalf.
Currently there are 46 professional orders that represent over 380,000 Quebec professionals, including Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec, founded in 1973.
The former Ordre professionnel des physiothérapeutes officially became Ordre professionnel de la physiothérapie du Québec (OPPQ) when physiotherapy technologists (PRTs) joined the organization in 2003.
